Editorial Guidelines
At Reckon, we’re all for small. This means we provide news, guides, and expert tips to help small businesses, whether they’re starting up, established, or hoping to grow. Our content is filled with information that puts complicated matters in simple terms so you can have a fair go.
We support this information with easy-to-use calculators and infographics to help business owners make informed decisions and follow strict editorial guidelines that focus on accuracy, reliability, and expertise.

Reckon Editorial Values
Here at Reckon, we know small business, which means we value authority, trust, integrity, and transparency in all we do.
Therefore, we follow these three key values when creating content
Reckon Editorial Principles
The purpose of our content is to help small business owners educate themselves and make better decisions. We create guides, explainers, and tools for everyone.
We aren’t the same as a business advisor (or even a business degree), so we keep things general. Our guides provide a broad overview that is useful for both newbies and professionals.
Every decision you make has trade-offs, so we keep things balanced by listing any pros and cons where applicable.
Our content team is responsible for creating and publishing all editorial content to high journalistic standards: this means they are objective, factual, and put the reader first. They work as part of Reckon’s marketing department and handle everything from product information to templates to business guides. The content team also makes all editorial decisions — even when handling commercial partnerships. (More on that later).
Since every reader is entitled to fair and accurate information, there is a clear difference between editorial and marketing content. Our helpful guides are contained within the Small Business Hub, Glossary, and template pages: this is where you can get the information you need to make understanding business easier.

About our commercial partnerships
Reckon often has commercial partnerships and affiliations with other brands. The goal of these relationships is to increase the value of our products and services and support small businesses.
Our commercial partners sometimes provide us with expertise and industry knowledge so we can provide reliable and helpful information to our readers. However, we are not their mouthpiece: any editorial opinions, analysis, and information are still our own and are not reliant on commercial considerations.
General Advice
We don’t give personal advice to readers. We don’t know your situation or the details of your business, and we aren’t here to tell you what to do.
Therefore, everything we write is General Advice: it’s about giving you information to help you make the best decision for you.
We always recommend seeking out a professional, whether that’s a business planner, tax advisor, bookkeeper, or accountant, if you would like personal advice about your circumstances.
Our review process
We’re committed to accuracy and reliability, so an editor reviews all our content internally. An accounting or subject matter expert reviews more detailed and in-depth guides as necessary. You can see this in the “Reviewed by” link on specific pages.
Our editing and review process is not just proofreading: we fact-check every piece so that it meets our high editorial standards.
Some of our content refers to external parties, such as government agencies and resources. Where this is the case, we put the information through a strict compliance review process and link to the relevant sources.
Accuracy and corrections
We do our best to ensure all content is as accurate and useful as possible. Finance is a crucial part of every small business, so we want to provide you with reliable and relevant information. The “written by” line will always list the original author, but subsequent changes may be made by other members of the senior editorial team (reflected in the “last updated by” date).
Feel free to contact us at media@reckon.com if you see anything on our website that needs further checking.
How do we make money?
Reckon makes accounting, payroll, and invoice software for every small business, but we don’t hide helpful information behind a paywall. Every resource and guide in our small business hub is completely free, including our templates and calculators. You don’t need to pay for Reckon software to take advantage of Reckon resources.

Fact Checked
Reckon knows small business: we’ve been making accounting and payroll software since 1985.
Our goal is to help business owners make smarter decisions, so we ensure the information on our website is carefully reviewed and fact-checked for accuracy.
How our content fact-checking process works
Reckon’s expert team of fact-checkers include experienced finance journalists, business editors, and accountants.
Our experienced and knowledgeable in-house team produces all editorial content. We follow strict editorial guidelines and do our best to ensure accuracy, completeness and relevance of the content we provide. We know finance is vital to business and we always aim to provide you with useful and accurate information.
Everything we publish goes through a rigorous editorial process to ensure accuracy and integrity and reflect the latest compliance and business practices in Australia.
We source information from primary or government websites and review our work to ensure the information we present abides by Australia’s strict financial advice regulations.
While we have processes in place to update rates, laws, and regulations as changes occur, sometimes the updates on our website might be delayed. We recommend confirming all information yourself, or with your accountant, before making a business decision or purchasing a product.
If you have any questions or see anything on our website that needs another look, please feel free to contact us at media@reckon.com.
